Lesson Instructions


This lesson is about exploring China's other foreign relations during the Cold War between 1949-1991. To what extent was China successful in creating an independent foreign policy during the Cold War? To answer this question, in groups you will research and explore China's foreign relations with different regions and nations during the Cold War.

Make notes of any foreign policy events, actions, agreements and treaties that were signed between the PRC and nations in that region. Consider the following questions to structure your notes:

  • What was China's overall aims and policies towards this region?
  • What diplomatic successes did China have in the region?
  • What diplomatic failures and challenges did China have in the region?
  • What competition did China face from the US and USSR in the region?
  • Overall, to what extent did China gain influence and power in this region by the end of the Cold War?
